The Blue House

The over 300-year old Jewish school was acquired in 2000 from the former sponsoring foundation ‘Ehemaliges Jüdisches Gemeindehaus Breisach e.V.’(former Jewish community centre). The third Jewish community (1640-1940) had bought the pub in 1829 to establish a school which existed until 1879. After the destruction of the synagogue in November 1938, the persecuted community established a prayer hall here. Upon completion of the restauration work the names of its members in 1933 were recorded in the “Corridor of Commemoration”. The documentation of their fates is being worked on together with the Jewish families throughout the world, this is “their return from exile”. The Blue House, the library of which comprises over 3000 books, is an education and commemoration site for the Upper Rhine history of the Jews. “Les Amis du Judengarten de Mackenheim” and the sponsoring foundation jointly take care of and maintain the oldest cemetery of the Breisach Jews in the forest of Mackenheim/Alsace.
